Panasonic Announces First Collaboration with National Environment Agency on Student Environment Education Module at the Launch of Its 'eco ideas' Factory

Singapore, Jan 26, 2010 - (ACN Newswire) - Panasonic Asia Pacific today officially announced its partnership with Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) on a new module for NEA's Environment Champions (Schools) - the Panasonic-NEA Environment Champions (Schools) Industry Module. This collaboration is the first time that NEA is working with an industry partner to roll out an experiential environment education module to further raise the environmental responsibility of NEA's Environment Champions, starting from March 2010.

Panasonic Asia Pacific announced this partnership at the launch of its 'eco ideas' Factory in Singapore, officiated by Dr Amy Khor, Senior Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources. Through the module, primary and secondary school students who have participated in NEA's Environment Champions Programme (which involves all primary and secondary schools, junior colleges and centralised institutes) will have a chance to gain first-hand knowledge of environmental issues, such as pollution control and energy conservation measures adopted by industries, with coaching from Panasonic staff.

Throughout the year, a total of six sessions will be held (three sessions each for primary and secondary school Environment Champions), with about 80 students in each session. Following these sessions, students can submit project proposals on protecting the environment and shortlisted proposals will receive seed funding from Panasonic to implement their environmental projects. The best projects stand to win a 5-day study trip to Japan where the students will get to learn more about advanced environmental technologies.

Commenting on the programme, Mr Tan Wee Hock, Director, NEA 3P Network Division, said: "We are very glad that Panasonic Asia Pacific is the first industry player to come on board to support NEA's Environment Champions Programme, which aims to raise students' understanding of environmental issues and empower them to take action to care for the environment. This partnership shows that industries can play an important role in encouraging students to take ownership of the environment at a young age, so that environmentally-friendly practices can become life-long habits."

Panasonic's 'eco ideas' Factory is a model facility which embodies Panasonic's 'eco ideas' strategy that was first adopted by the company globally in 2007. The 'eco ideas' Factory in Singapore will play a crucial role in achieving Panasonic's green commitments in the Asia Pacific region to manufacture eco-friendly products and develop sustainable industry practices and, more importantly, raise the level of eco consciousness in the community.

The Panasonic Refrigeration Devices factory in Singapore was selected as an 'eco ideas' Factory as it is one of Panasonic's biggest manufacturing operations in Asia and Panasonic is a leading manufacturer and supplier of refrigeration compressors globally.

Mr Ikuo Miyamoto, Panasonic Asia Pacific's Managing Director, said: "Environmental degradation is happening in many parts of the world but the choice is ours to reverse the trend. Panasonic aims to lead in the area of sustainability and wants to play an effective role in changing mindsets to assume greater responsibility in community outreach."
