|More than 700 Exhibitors from 17 Countries Taking Part in Four-Day Fair|
HONG KONG, Feb 17, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - The 21st edition of the HKTDC Education and Careers Expo opened today at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) with more than 700 exhibitors, a fair record, and a new Recruitment Forum to provide job seekers with on-site interview opportunities.
The four-day event, which continues through 20 February, is organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). The expo is a one-stop shop for visitors seeking information on continuing education, career prospects and business start-ups.
This year's expo features exhibitors from 17 countries and regions: Australia, Canada, the Chinese mainland, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Under Secretary for Education Kenneth Chen and HKTDC Executive Director Fred Lam officiated at the expo's opening ceremony today. Mr Lam said the quality of the city's workforce is "linked inextricably to the quality of our education. The global language of the future - the key to success - is knowledge," said Mr Lam. "Our business community understands the importance of education to development and economic growth. Every individual has his own unique talent and interests. This expo helps people discover themselves and realise their ambitions."
The fair's two major exhibit categories are Careers and Education. Among those taking part are the property agency Centaline, Kerry Logistics, Bamboos Education and Bureau de Quebec a Shanghai. Sogo Department Store and New York Film Academy are also joining the expo.
New to the fair are nine non-government organisations, including The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Playground Association. The organisations are promoting a wide range of programmes on retraining, skills development and youth counselling.
The first three days of the expo are organised around themes: Chinese mainland study, creative education and professional accreditation.
Chinese Mainland Study Day (17 February)
The Education section gathers some 650 institutions from around the world, as well as local universities, including The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong.
Top-tier universities on the mainland are also participating, with representatives from Jinan University and Wuhan University on hand. The Education Department of Henan Province is leading 22 tertiary institutions to Hong Kong and organising a seminar today to promote study opportunities in the province.
Creative Education Day (18 February)
The Creative Education zone features exhibits by the Baron School of Music, Beauty Tech Institute, Fatbars (an Apple-authorised training centre), Hong Kong Baptist University's Academy of Film, the Hong Kong Communication Art Centre and Savannah College of Art and Design. The institutions are spotlighting programmes in music, design, advertising, photography, animation, film production and more.
Creative professionals will share insights at two seminars on Friday. The experts taking part include composer and music producer Mark Lui, film directors Lawrence Lau and Kenneth Bi, and Professor Cheuk Pak-tong, Director of Baptist University's Academy of Film. Students from Hong Kong's Youth College of the Vocational Training Council will also demonstrate make-up and hairstyling.
In addition, Baptist University's Academy of Film will showcase the work of the eighth Global Chinese Universities Student Film and TV Festival. Known as the University Oscars, the festival welcomes participants from students on the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. This year, 31 finalists are competing for various awards in the drama, documentary, animation and experimental categories.
Professional Accreditation Day (19 February)
The Careers section is featuring 50 professional associations from accounting, engineering, surveying and actuarial science, presenting information about employment prospects in various government departments, private enterprises and services industries. The Hong Kong Police Force, the Fire Services Department, Prudential Assurance Co Ltd and Zurich Insurance Group (HK) are also discussing employment opportunities at the expo.
A series of thematic seminars and practical workshops on English and personality profiling will be held on Saturday to equip visitors with job-seeking techniques.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club and Cathay Pacific Airways are offering onsite interviews for qualified job applicants who bring along a resume and related information. Vacancies vary from betting service assistants, receptionists and cooks, to customer service officers, assistant restaurant managers and branch supervisors.
More than 60 career and education-related seminars will be held.
