NEC wins Asia Pacific Gateway (APG) Submarine Cable System

Beijing and Tokyo, Dec 20, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE6701) announced today the signing of a multi-million dollar supply contract with the global consortium of communications companies, including NTT Communications, KT, Chunghwa Telecom, and others, to construct the Asia Pacific Gateway (APG) system, a high-bandwidth optical submarine cable system that will link 9 countries and territories in Asia. The signing took place at Beijing.

The APG system is designed for a transmission speed of 40Gb/s per wavelength, utilizing the latest Digital Coherent detection and OADM (Optical Add-Drop Multiplexing) technologies. Total length is expected to be 10,400km, linking China Mainland, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore. APG is expected to meet the demand for intra-Asia connectivity between South East Asia and North Asia.

"We are honored to have been selected as the supplier of the APG system and firmly believe that once completed, APG will have a significant impact and NEC's state of the art advanced Digital Coherent 40G SLTE's and OADM Branching Units will contribute to the economies of Asia and its surrounding countries," said Mr. Nobuyuki Yanaginuma, Associate Senior Vice President at NEC. "We thank each participating member of the APG consortium for their trust and support and look forward to completing this landmark project. NEC will continue to dedicate its strength to the development of telecommunication infrastructure in these and other countries across the globe."
