The WSA Wine Challenge 2012 Crowns Winners
A Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Kabinett by Markus Molitor from Germany takes home top honours

Singapore, Apr 17, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - A key fringe event for one of Asia's biggest shows of its kind, Wine&SpiritsAsia2012 (WSA2012), the WSA Wine Challenge has grown in stature as a highly-recognised platform to reveal experts' choice of wines for the Asian palate.
Winners of the WSA Wine Challenge 2012 have been announced in late March after an intensive two days of judging. Highly-respected European-based wine critic Mr. Joel Payne headed the judging of the challenge with a distinguished group of panelists, including Mr. Alphonse Kaelbel, Director of Wines from Marina Bay Sands, and Mr. Michael T. Doherty, Managing Director of Eclipse Restaurants Limited, amongst others. The challenge was organised to the highest standards, with judges gathered from a healthy mix of purchasers and sommeliers, in order to look at the market from as many aspects as possible.

10 wines took home 'Gold' ratings, 37 garnered 'Silver', 109 earned 'Bronze', and 97 were listed as 'Recommended' by judges. Three 'best' wines were also picked out for special mentions in the categories of "Best Sparkling", "Best Red", "Best White" and "Best Wine" separately.

The "Best Sparkling wine is a Prestige Grand Cru NV from France's Champagne Paul Dethune, and the "Best Red" is a 2010 Gatt Old Vine Shiraz from Australia's Gatt Wines. However, it is the 'Best White' that stole the hearts (and palates) of the judges, also winning the title of 'Best Wine".

The 'Best White' and "Best Wine" for WSA Wine Challenge 2012 is a 2009 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Kabinett by Markus Molitor from Germany. Chief judge Mr. Joel Payne observes, "The nudge for the "Best White" and "Best Wine" came from Ms. Fongyee Walker, a China-based panelist. She said that this was the most unique wine in the tasting, (it) had a purity in the silky sweet texture that Asians would enjoy. Commenting on the Wine Challenge in general, Mr. Payne also singled out the Australian entrants for a special mention, "My surprise was the style of many of the Australian entries. They are moving away from high levels of alcohol to achieving more balance in the wines."

"Being very rigorous, the Wine Challenge has proven itself to be meritocratic and a cut above others, as it recognises quality wines based solely on their virtues. Thus, the challenge gives the opportunity for wines from both prominent and emerging labels a chance to shine even brighter, by gaining greater recognition in the rising Asian wine markets," says Ms. Ting Siew Mui, Project Director (Lifestyle) of Singapore Exhibition Services, organiser of WSA2012.

The wines will be labelled according to their level of merit, and will be exhibited and served for tasting at a dedicated section of the exhibition at Singapore Expo Hall 5.
