A Toast to Wine&SpiritsAsia2012
Wine&SpiritsAsia2012 caps off a very fulfilling four days for exhibitors and ends on a high note with the crowning of winners for the RIPE-WSA Cocktail Challenge

Singapore, Apr 20, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - As the lights go down on the 12th edition of biennial Wine&SpiritsAsia (WSA), one of the region's largest trade shows of its kind, exhibitors must surely be reflecting on what has been a very fulfilling four days.

Held from 17 - 20 April, WSA2012 attracted a truly cosmopolitan exhibitor mix, with more than 140 exhibitors coming from 27 countries/regions. Even more impressive was the number of attendees WSA2012 and FHA2012 (Food&HotelAsia2012) combined had witnessed - some 60,000 attendees (44 per cent from overseas) walked through its doors over the course of the show.

WSA2012 featured an international selection of some of the world's most celebrated winemaking regions, with Australia, Austria, France and Singapore being prominently represented by group pavilions. One of the exhibitors showcasing their products and services at the Australian pavilion was Mr. Hendra Widjaja of Stuart Wines, who had started the company by producing his first vintage on Christmas Eve in 1999, on the cusp of the then-new millennium.

The French group pavilion showcased a variety of products from food to wine and spirits. The French pavilion featured Mr. Herve Kerlann, President of Maison Kerlann, a winemaker now plying his trade in Burgundy. Mr. Kerlann comments, "We have returned to WSA after some time as we have seen a renewed interest in Burgurdian wines and we think that it is now the right time to make a comeback."

He continues, "Asia is a very important region for us and WSA2012 was an ideal platform to meet plenty of new contacts and renew old ones as well. Overall, WSA2012 has been a fruitful event for us."

Indeed, the WSA Wine Challenge underlines the importance of Asia as a fast-growing region for the drinking and appreciation of wine. The event saw hundreds of wines from across the world taking part to be judged by an international panel of experts headed by renowned wine critic Mr. Joel Payne.

Fittingly enough, the "Best Wine" of the show, which had also won the title of "Best White", was one that was judged especially suitable for the Asian palate. The "Best White" and "Best Wine" for WSA Wine Challenge 2012 is a 2009 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Kabinett by Markus Molitor from Germany. The accolades for "Best Sparkling" and "Best Red" wine was picked up by a Prestige Grand Cru NV from France's Champagne Paul Dethune, and a 2010 Gatt Old Vine Shiraz from Australia's Gatt Wines respectively.

"It's been a wonderful show! We submitted some wines for the WSA Wine Challenge 2012 and have won silver awards. We are really excited about it and can't wait to display our certificates and put the award stickers on the bottles. We'll definitely be back to visit the show in 2014," says Mr. Franklin Sitompul, Director of Sales & Marketing from Hatten Wines, Indonesia.

Adding to the buzz on the show floor was the first edition of the RIPE-WSA Cocktail Challenge, jointly organised with RIPE Australian Fruit Juices, and supported by the Association of Bartenders and Sommeliers Singapore (ABSS).

Comprising five categories - cocktail, mocktail, speed bottle cap-opening, flairing and choya-based cocktail - the event saw over 30 local bartenders and even a pair from further afield, the Maldives and Macau, battling for top honours. More than just a platform for bartenders to show off their skills, the RIPE-WSA Cocktail Challenge also provided a stage for those newer to the art of mixology to expand their horizons in the crucible of competition.

All told, it was a very successful show and it is of no wonder some exhibitors are already booking their booth space for the next edition of WSA, slated to take place from 8 - 11 April 2014. Ms. Ting Siew Mui, Project Director (Lifestyle) of Singapore Exhibition Services, organiser of WSA2012, asserts: "The healthy visitor and vibrant sales figures projected for WSA2012 demonstrate its draw as a premier show in the wine and spirits industry. More significantly, the positive comments we've received for the 2014 edition proves the show is, and will remain extremely relevant for key industry players in the global marketplace."
