Andrew Krotewicz, Executive General Manager Asset Strategy, CS Energy a speaker at the marcus evans Power Generation APAC Summit 2012, on meeting the demand for cleaner energy sources. |
London, Aug 9, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - "In Australia there is a strong demand for generation from cleaner sources," says Andrew Krotewicz, Executive General Manager Asset Strategy, CS Energy. This demand is driven by a national compulsory target to achieve 20 per cent renewable generation by 2020 and by the introduction of a price on carbon, he adds. A speaker at the marcus evans Power Generation APAC Summit 2012, taking place in Macao, China, 3 - 5 December, Krotewicz discusses power asset management, employee safety and meeting the demands of Australia's electricity market.
- Is the power generation demand in Australia growing?
The major challenge currently faced by Queensland generators, as distinct from other regions in Australia's National Electricity Market, relates to significant oversupply of generation, which is currently more than 30 per cent.
Over the past five years, the average system demand has effectively remained flat with only small increases in peak demand. The slowing of demand growth is being driven by both direct financial incentives for the rollout of renewable energy alternatives, such as domestic and commercial solar photovoltaic (PV) generation and other government policy instruments. This is driving wholesale market prices to below market entrant prices and the full cost of recovery, while production and fuel costs continue to increase at or above inflation rates.
In Australia, there is a strong demand for generation from cleaner sources driven primarily by a national compulsory target to achieve 20 per cent renewable generation by 2020 and by the introduction of a price on carbon from 1 July 2012. The initial price of AUD 23 per tonne of carbon dioxide represents a cost for most coal-fired generators in Queensland that is comparable to or greater than the cost of fuel.
CS Energy has invested in the Kogan Creek Solar Boost Project, which has also received funding support from the Commonwealth Government's Renewable Energy Demonstration Program. The Kogan Creek Solar Boost Project is a large scale solar thermal addition to our largest and newest coal-fired generating unit, the Kogan Creek Power Station near Chinchilla in South West Queensland. The coal-fired Kogan Creek Power Station is a 750 megawatt supercritical unit that will be supplemented by up to 44 megawatts of solar generated steam in peak solar conditions.
The project will use AREVA Solar's Australian-pioneered Compact Linear Fresnel Reflector (CLFR) technology to provide a direct supply of steam into the unit feed heating system.
- How can the reliability of assets be increased?
It is a significant challenge to maintain high levels of plant reliability in a cost restrained environment that continues to be driven by an unfavourable trading outlook. We have introduced five major programmes which aim to address plant performance issues while also managing operating and capital expenditure. One of these programmes is the Asset Management project which aims to restore the balance away from corrective maintenance to asset management by reviewing and improving preventative and proactive maintenance strategies.
- Does plant safety need to be improved?
Many improvements have been made to work practices, safety management systems and environmental work conditions, all of which have seen a vast improvement in safety performance in Australian generators over the last two decades. However, opportunities for improvement need to be constantly pursued through refreshed and reinvigorated approaches to make safety front of mind for all staff, supervisors and managers alike.
