4 in 10 Candidates Find Researching a Company for an Interview Challenging - Robert Walters

TOKYO, Apr 24, 2013 - (JCN Newswire) - According to a recent survey conducted by Robert Walters PLC (LSE: RWA), Japan's most trusted specialist recruiter for global business, almost four in ten professionals find researching a company for an interview challenging.

Robert Walters Japan surveyed visitors to its Facebook page and asked users what they found was the most challenging issue when preparing for an interview. Of the 500 professionals in Japan that participated in the web poll, 39% of candidates feel performing background research for a company is the most difficult challenge when preparing for a job interview. 22% of respondents also indicate that they are unsure what appearance and clothing is most appropriate and 13% of candidates have trouble promoting their own skills and abilities during an interview.

Here are Robert Walters Japan's five tips to help candidates prepare successfully for an interview:

1. Be Resourceful - While a company website is great for product details or recent news, other sources such as investor reports or acquaintances in the industry can be just as valuable for information. Candidates should also review their current and past employers, and their key achievements at each company.

2. Study the Competition - Investigating a firm's competition can offer a stronger understanding of the industry. Candidates should be prepared to answer what unique points attracted them to an interviewing company over a competing firm.

3. First Impressions Count - People tend to set their opinions about others the first few seconds after meeting, so initial appearance can leave a lasting impression. Even if company policy allows for casual clothing, candidates should dress like a professional throughout the interview process.

4. Getting to the Interview - Candidates should research transportation options, routes from a train station or parking availability to ensure they arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled interview time. Online maps are helpful resources to inspect an unfamiliar location beforehand.

5. Know Your Interviewer - At Western companies, address interviewers by their surnames, for example, Mr. Jenkins. Candidates should prepare the full names of any potential interviewers they will meet and if there are uncertainties with pronunciation, candidates can ask an interviewer or receptionist to repeat their name. It is also helpful to view the interviewers' profiles on sites like LinkedIn in order to find mutual acquaintances or common interests in professional groups.
