Bill Clinton Visits Camp Leakey and Rimba Raya Conservation on the Clinton Foundation Asia 2014 Tour

Central Kalimantan, INDONESIA, Aug 6, 2014 - (ACN Newswire) - Bill Clinton, and a Clinton Foundation delegation, arrived at the Iskandar Airport in Central Kalimantan on July 20, paying a 2-day visit to the region during the Clinton Foundation Asia 2014 tour, and a first visit to the forestry projects in the region receiving support from the Clinton Climate Initiative.

Bill Clinton Visits Camp Leakey, Tanjung Putting

Clinton paid the visit to meet working partners of the Clinton Foundation in Kalimantan, including the Orangutan Indonesia Foundation (Yayorin) Kobar, Rimba Raya Conservation (RRC) Seruyan, and Rimba Makmur Utama (RMU) Katingan.

Clinton began his visit with Dr. Birute Galdikas at Camp Leakey, a research station belonging to Orangutan Foundation International (OFI), located in the Tanjung Puting National Park, and the OFI's Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine (OCCQ) in Pasir Panjang Village, South Arut subdistrict, West Kotawaringin regency.

Riding in a motorboat, Clinton and the entourage cruised down the Sekonyer river reaching Camp Leakey. Tanjung Puting National Park stretches throughout West Kotawaringin, Kumai subdistrict, with an area of 253,860 hectares, and Danau Sembuluh and Seruyan Hilir, Hanau subdistrict, Seruyan regency, with an area of 161,180 hectares.

Sunday night, at a Gala Dinner organized in Swiss Belhotel, Pangkalan Bun, Clinton and the assembled audience heard from Rimba Raya Conservation, one of the companies invited to make a presentation on the ecosystem and forest area restoration.

L. Djonni Andhella, CEO of Rimba Raya Conservation (PT RRC), who accompanied President Clinton throughout the Central Kalimantan tour, stated that the OFI, led by Dr. Birute Galdikas, was the partner of PT RRC during the OCCQ release program of the orangutan in the work area of PT RRC.

Nisa Jalil, Vice President of Public & Government Relations, PT RRC, explained that PT RRC cooperated with the Tanjung Puting National Park in forest area management covering 18,642 hectares.

Jim Procanik, Managing Director, Infinite Earth Asia, acting as the Project Developer of the Ecosystem Restoration (ER) program of PT RRC, also made a presentation to Bill Clinton and the Foundation on the planning and the execution of the ER program in the work area of PT RRC in Seruyan regency, Central Kalimantan.

"My impression of President Clinton was that he cares deeply about the future of our forests, climate change and of course the plight of the orangutan. I appreciate his level of engagement, knowledge and his sincere concern for environmental issues. We are thankful he came to see the project in person," said Procanik.

On July 21, Bill Clinton and the entourage left Pangkalan Bun for the next destination, Australia.

The Clinton Foundation is a non-profit foundation with a primary focus on nature conservation, forest and animal protection, including orangutans, and the impact of climate change.

Rimba Raya Conservation is the first company in Indonesia that implements the REDD+ program, in the Seruyan Regency, Central Kalimantan as its work area. The Company has three priority programs; climate change recovery, conservation of the forest biodiversity, and village community development.
