SIWW, Singapore, June 22, 2009 - (ACN Newswire) - "The Asia Pacific region is like no other from a water perspective. It is a region that faces some of the most serious water and climate issues juxtaposed with the leading, and most innovative, water research and development in the world," said Chuck Gordon, President and CEO of Siemens Water Technologies at the Singapore Water Week (SIWW) held June 22-26.
"In this region, in particular, continued population growth and industrialization are driving the need to effectively manage water resources and provide long-term sustainable solutions," added Gordon. "Because of these drivers, we see the Asia Pacific region as critical to the company's future growth, and we continue to invest in and propel our research and development activities."
At SIWW, Siemens Water Technologies features some of its key installations in the region, including the Changi Water Reclamation and Changi NEWater plants, which were started up in various phases during the last several weeks. "Our activities on the Changi plants with Singapore's PUB, as well as Sembcorp, illustrate the latest in technology and sustainable water treatment solutions," said Gordon.
The Changi Water Reclamation Plant, part of Singapore's Deep Tunnel Sewerage System [DTSS], begins operation this month. The Water Reclamation Plant, which treats water for discharge to the environment or as feed for Singapore's NEWater plants, is the cornerstone of the first phase of the DTSS. This facility features odor control and primary and secondary wastewater treatment equipment from Siemens Water Technologies. The multi-stage scrubber odor control equipment controls odors at the influent pumping station. Siemens provided nearly 50,000 Dual Air fine bubble and Wide Band coarse bubble diffuser systems to aerate wastewater for secondary treatment. Siemens also provided 484 chain and scraper mechanisms for 48 stacked clarifiers, which treat the wastewater to high quality with a reduced footprint. The plant helps reclaim more than 800,000m3/day of wastewater.
The Changi NEWater Plant, located on top of the Changi Water Reclamation Plant, started up its first phase in May 2009 with a production capacity of 69,000 m3/day; the total production capacity will be 228,000 m3/day when the plant is completed in May 2010. Siemens Water Technologies supplied seven Memcor CP membrane filtration systems for the NEWater plant. The footprint and weight were critical to the overall design of the membrane filtration systems, since they had to be installed on the roof of the existing Changi Water Reclamation Plant. Long-term operating costs and energy efficiency were also key considerations for Sembcorp, the plant operator. The Memcor CP system's unique design reduces energy and chemical consumption.
"Our best customer and business partnerships are those with strong understanding and a common goal. Each of these projects illustrates that by bringing together the latest in technology with creative design, we as an industry can meet future water needs," added Gordon.
In addition to featuring key customer installations, the company highlighted its R&D efforts in the region, including recent developments with its desalination technology and advancements with its membrane technology. Technical experts from Water Technologies' global R&D center in Singapore will give several platform presentations at SIWW. The company's R&D focuses on technologies that reduce life-cycle costs, decrease energy consumption, minimize waste, and reuse water.
The company features four new product line additions, a result of recent R&D efforts, which expand the company's water, wastewater and high purity product portfolio in the oil and gas, municipal and industrial markets.
The new Siemens polishing reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment system can be used on offshore platforms and drilling rigs to generate high quality water on-board, eliminating costly transportation charges and allowing flexibility of water volume production. Another addition to the offshore platform product offering is the new, compact walnut shell filter. Its proprietary filter design reduces the weight and footprint, and lowers the cost of multiple filter systems.
The IonRight system provides industries such as metal finishing and microelectronics with consistent, high-purity water, while lowering operating costs. Siemens also announces the new Ionpure VNX-HH electrodeionization (EDI) module, which represents a significant advancement in feed water hardness tolerance, to two parts per million (ppm) as CaCO3 - a hardness level that is four times the industry standard of 0.5 ppm.
The latest technology in automation, drives, communication and instrumentation will also be highlighted. For optimizing water plant and processes, Siemens offers an integrated automation platform through the Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) solution concept designed to enhance productivity, flexibility and efficiency throughout the entire water plant and production lifecycle.
