Marco Miranda of Foxtel Management Pty Ltd, a sponsor company at the marcus evans Mining Technology and Operations Summit 2014, on providing entertainment to a mining workforce. |
LONDON, Oct 27, 2014 - (ACN Newswire) - "The biggest asset mining companies have is their people. The industry has been competitive in attracting and retaining staff, especially during the boom, but we believe that offering good entertainment to employees staying in remote areas and far away from family is also key to keeping them happy," says Marco Miranda, Director of Sales, Foxtel Management Pty Ltd.
Foxtel Management Pty Ltd is a sponsor company at the marcus evans Mining Technology and Operations Summit 2014, in Perth, Australia, 17 - 18 November.
- How could mining companies take better care of their most valuable resource, their workforce?
The satisfaction and welfare of workers is very much a key focus in mining. The industry recognises the fact that providing high quality accommodation to workers is important, and entertainment is one aspect of that. For us, it is really about providing an entertainment service that gives people access to the choice of programmes and the entertainment experience that they would normally have at home. It is also about reducing any feelings of isolation that they may have, and keeping them connected to the outside world with programming, such as live sport and news. Access to good entertainment helps them relax and unwind after a busy day, just like anybody else, and can contribute to their overall well-being.
- Why is it that the traditional way entertainment has been provided is sometimes not enough anymore?
The traditional method of distributing channels can be quite limiting in terms of the number of channels. The capital expense of infrastructure to get more channels to each worker's room can be expensive. Therefore, the outdated model of providing a selection of 10 - 20 channels does not always meet all of their individual expectations and personal tastes. People want more choice and control over what they watch in their own personal quarters, as well as the capability to record, rewind or pause live TV, which Foxtel now offers through its Mining & Workforce Accommodation Standard & Platinum packages - both of which offer an iQ box in each worker's room.
- What makes the biggest impact on their well-being?
We are strong believers in onsite activities that bring them together for social interaction, whether to watch live sporting events together or trivia nights for example. Social events can have a big impact on their well-being when they are away from home. For this purpose, we have organised activities for various partners such as AFL and NRL Superstars Days and visits to sites by sporting celebrities. These sorts of activities demonstrate Foxtel's commitment to entertaining the mining industry, while providing the workers with a different source of entertainment for the day.
- What trends should mining companies prepare for?
Mining companies should be looking for content offerings that provide revenue share models for them, such as video on demand. Besides that being an opportunity for providers like Foxtel, it is a model that allows the mining companies to benefit, too.
