International Field Trial Confirms Practicality of Telemedicine

TOKYO, Mar 11, 2008 - (ACN Newswire) - NTT Com has completed a joint international field trial between Japan and Thailand that demonstrates the practical application of technologies for remote medical instruction and care, including surgeries performed off-site using robots.

The trial, which NTT Com conducted in collaboration with Nippon Telephone and Telegraph Corporation (NTT), Kyushu University of Japan and Chulalongkorn University of Thailand, began in 2005, and paves the way for telemedicine systems that enable training and care to be provided remotely in areas of Asia, etc. where medical specialists and facilities are limited.

Medical institutions at Kyushu University and Chulalongkorn University were connected by the Japan Gigabit Network 2 (JGN2), a research test-bed network operated by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology.

The trial confirmed the configuration, bandwidth and latency the required network, the characteristics and quality of audiovisual equipment for telecommunication, and the effectiveness of remote-instruction equipment and other system components. In addition, the trial verified the international latencies of various codecs, as well as encoding rates required for endoscopic surgery.

Systems tested during the trial included an interactive system for real-time communication, an annotation system for remote medical instruction, and a server system for video instruction.

In addition to indicating the practicality and effectiveness of pioneering applications for broadband environments in Asia, the trial is expected to hasten the implementation of remote medical care on a global scale, with Japan serving as a hub.

Going forward, the participants will work to resolve remaining technical issues and improve existing systems to enable the practical application of telemedicine technologies.

The trial was conducted as part of the “Advanced Information Communication Technology Collaboration Experiments for Creating International Info-communication Hub,” an initiative by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to promote the spread of broadband applications in Asia using the latest in ICT technologies.
