Ensuring Industrial Plant Safety & Efficiency
Robert Jarrard of Plattco Corporation, a solution provider at the marcus evans Industrial Plant Management Summit 2015, on how plants could become safer and more efficient with airlock valves.

NEW YORK, N.Y., May 22, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - "Safety, environmental issues, efficiency, cost reduction and sustainability are at the top of the list of concerns for industrial plant managers," says Robert Jarrard, Vice President, Plattco Corporation. "When manufacturing conditions are demanding, when processes have to operate in extreme temperatures or pressure ranges, when the material is sticky or difficult to convey, or when corrosive or abrasive materials must pass easily, Plattco airlock valves are better able to address plant managers' concerns than typical rotary valves can," he explains.

Plattco Corporation is a solution provider at the marcus evans Industrial Plant Management Summit 2015, taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada, June 22-23.

- What are the biggest issues in industrial manufacturing today?

Safety, environmental issues, efficiency, cost reduction and sustainability are top concerns, but it is difficult to achieve them, especially in heavy manufacturing, while also reducing a plant's environmental footprint.

In addition, since the recession, many organizations had to reduce staff, particularly maintenance staff who usually have the biggest impact on efficiency. Since their most experienced, and highly paid staff, were let go, industrial plants have been trying to accomplish all of their objectives in this scarce environment.

- Is it on the efficiency front that Plattco valves make the biggest impact?

I believe Plattco comes into the equation on all of the fronts. The way manufacturers can become more efficient is by not allowing things into or out of the system with our airlock valves. The better the airlock, the more efficient and profitable the plant can be, the less variability in processes because we are not allowing outside fugitive air into their system. They are also environmentally conscious because an airtight process does not allow pollutants in or out.

On the sustainability front, our valves are indefinitely renewable and easily restored back to their factory new specifications without the need to take equipment off line. That also works towards the safety angle, eliminating the need for heavy rigging, thus reducing the risk of injury.

- Compared to rotary values, why do airlock valves require less maintenance?

Rotary valves are ubiquitous, what everyone uses, yet interestingly enough most people understand that they are not airtight. For the blade to turn, some clearance is required, which is where air comes back into the system. From the moment a rotary valve is turned on, it only gets worse. If the material coming through is sticky, it builds up in the bottom of each vane. If it is abrasive or corrosive, it increases the distance between the vane and the housing, so the airlock gets more and more lost.

In addition, almost without exception, rotary valves must be removed from the manufacturing process to be worked on. Our valves can be restored in line in less than two hours.

Very often it is not the material coming through that causes issues. Every plant has scheduled outages or shutdowns for engineers to work on the equipment. It is not uncommon for a welding rod or a screwdriver to fall in by mistake. When the system is back up and the object hits the rotary valve, it freezes it up. With the Plattco double flap valve, the object just lands on the flapper and passes through without disrupting the manufacturing process.

- Why must plants determine their wear cycle?

All the variables in manufacturing, whether it is high temperature, pressure or the materials going through the valve, result in different wear cycles. It is important for manufacturers to know how long they have to change certain parts, so they do not lose their airlock, and always have that efficiency in the process.

About the Industrial Plant Management Summit 2015

The Industrial Plant Management Summit is the premium forum bringing senior plant managers and corporate executives together with solution providers. Taking place at the Red Rock Resort & Spa, Las Vegas, Nevada, June 22-23, the Summit includes presentations on overcoming the ageing workforce challenges, sustainability, deploying 'big data' strategies, and ecological and economical best plant practices.
