IRF urges better collaboration between public and private to improve road safety in Malaysia |
KUALA LUMPUR, Mar 7, 2016 - (ACN Newswire) - One of the many important aspects of a developed nation is the safety of its roads and highways. In Malaysia, the number of reported road crashes increased by 2.74% to 489,606 in 2015, compared with 476,196 for 2014. Meanwhile there were 6,706 road fatalities in 2015, out of which 19.4% were the result of poor road conditions and vehicle defects.
With the World Bank estimating road crashes cost approximately 1% to 3% of a country's annual Gross National Product, evidently much needs to be done to improve road safety, especially in developing countries.
Establishing the importance of improving road safety in Malaysia and the Southeast Asia region, Marcus Evans and event co-host International Road Federation (IRF) successfully opened the Roads and Highways conference today. IRF is a non-governmental organisation that encourages and promotes development and maintenance of better, safer and more sustainable roads and road networks around the world
Taking place from 7th to 9th March 2016, the conference provided a platform for visitors to discover and discuss the latest trends in road infrastructure development, road safety policies, new technologies and successful practices of road asset management.
According to Mr Kiran Kapila, Chairman of the International Road Federation, "Road safety has become a social and significant problem for developing nations. During the conference, our discussion surrounded the 'safe system approach', which is based on five pillars: road safety management, safer roads, safer vehicles, safer road users and an effective post-crash care. This approach aims at developing a road transport system that is better in accommodating human error and takes into consideration the vulnerability of the human body."
"Countries in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia are investing heavily in making roads safer. We laud the Malaysian Government's commitment to invest in road and highway infrastructure, and studies have shown that this will have a multiplier effect on the Malaysian economy."
"Besides this, it is also vital for the public and private sector to work hand-in-hand to improve roads and highways. As the private sectors take on the responsibility of providing a safe work environment for their drivers and transport operators, the public sector can reciprocate by providing safer road conditions, undertaking campaigns on better road usage as well as providing efficient post-crash care."
Mr O Swee Aun, Country Sales Manager of GE Lighting Malaysia, which is the Platinum Sponsor of the conference, said, "We are delighted to support this conference as a Platinum Sponsor as GE Lighting strongly believes that it is important for relevant stakeholders to come together and work towards building better and safer road systems."
"We also believe that lighting has a central role to play in ensuring the safety of our roads and highways. GE Lighting is a global front-runner in LED roadway lighting and our products are able to enhance carbon and energy-related savings while changing the environment into safer and more welcoming areas," he explained.
"GE Lighting's LED roadway lights can offer savings within a range of 40% to 70%. There are some instances where savings from our products have been recorded at an even higher percentage compared to conventional roadway lighting systems," he concluded.
The 3rd Roads and Highways conference featured speakers from Malaysia and around the world including Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS); Ministry of Public Works and Housing, Indonesia; and Raghav Chandra, Chairman of National Highway Authority of India; amongst others.
Sponsors of the conference are GE Lighting (platinum sponsor), Ammann (gold sponsor), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Mechatronics Systems, Ltd., YDT Technology International Co. Ltd., RTS Technology Sdn. Bhd. (technology sponsors) and Ennis-Flint (business development sponsor).
