Mitsubishi Corporation and Partners to Expand Vinh Tan IV Power Plant in Vietnam

Vietnam, Mar 11, 2016 - (JCN Newswire) - Mitsubishi Corporation (MC), together with Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction of Korea (Doosan) and Vietnamese partners, Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 2 and Pacific Corporation, has concluded a contract with state-owned Vietnam Electricity (EVN) to build a 600 MW coal-fired thermal power plant in Vinh Tan, located in in Vietnam's Binh Thuan province.

The four companies have been working together to construct two coal-fired thermal power plants at the same site since the conclusion of a contract with EVN in 2013 (600 MW each, total 1200 MW). The new plant will be constructed adjacent to the other two plants, and is scheduled for completion in 2019. MC will supply steam turbine and generator and Doosan will be in charge of boiler supply and site construction while the Vietnamese partners will be in charge of ancillary equipment. Built using supercritical technology, the new plant will be more efficient and more eco-friendly than other coal-fired power plants in operation in Vietnam.

Electricity demand in Vietnam is expected to see a remarkable increase of more than 10% per annum in the coming years in light of the country's annual GDP growth rate of 6% to 7%. In particular, Southern Vietnam, the country's largest economic bloc which includes Ho Chi Minh City, faces a critical situation in terms of its ability to adequately supply the increasing demand for power. In addition, other plans for developing power generation facilities have been delayed, making this project an initiative of national importance as part of efforts to realize a stable supply of power for sustainable economic growth.

Through this project, MC will seek to contribute not only to a stable supply of power in Vietnam, but also to the country's overall economic growth, while at the same time promoting the use of eco-friendly infrastructure across South East Asia and around the world.
