Mitsubishi Corporation Awarded Contract for Renovation of Taiwan Power Company's Boilers and Environmental Facilities

TOKYO, June 14, 2016 - (JCN Newswire) - Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) has been awarded a full turnkey contract by Taiwan Power Company (TPC) for the renovation of boilers and environmental facilities at TPC's Taichung Power Plant (Units 1 to 4) in Taiwan. MC will serve as the main contractor while Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd. (MHPS) will supply the main components. CTCI Corporation (CTCI), a Taiwan-based engineering and construction company, will supply ancillary equipment and undertake installation work.

This renovation project is aimed at enhancing the plant's capacity to comply with tighter emissions regulations for NOx (nitrogen oxide), SO2 (sulfur dioxide) and particulate matter. Work is scheduled for completion in November 2019.

In Taiwan, the balance between electricity demand and supply has been in a critical state for the past several years, with a growing fear that electricity reserve margins will enter negative territory if current trends continue. While it is necessary to improve the work load ratios of power plants, environmental regulations have also been getting strict, making the upgrading of environmental equipment an urgent requirement for existing power plants to continue operating. This project is therefore regarded as an important one for the stable supply of electricity in Taiwan going forward.

MC has previously been awarded a series of contracts from TPC, including the construction of a natural gas-fired gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power generation facility for the Dah-Tarn Power Plant in 2003, a thermal power plant for the Linkou Power Plant in 2011 and a GTCC facility for the Tunghsiao Power Plant in 2013. Through this new project, MC is aiming to continue contributing to the stable supply of electricity and to economic growth in Taiwan, while at the same time pursuing its goal of expanding its power generation business across Asia.
