TOKYO, Aug 9, 2016 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu today announced the publication of the Fujitsu Group Environmental Report 2016. From fiscal 2013 through fiscal 2015, the Fujitsu Group set the Fujitsu Group Environmental Action Plan (Stage VII) as its environmental goals, and has been working on environmental improvement activities. This report consolidates fiscal 2015 case studies and results, as well as expressing Fujitsu's way of thinking about environmental management. The English language version is scheduled for release on September 08, 2016. In fiscal 2015, the Fujitsu Group, in and outside of Japan, achieved all 17 goals set under the Fujitsu Group Environmental Action Plan (Stage VII), including contributing to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of about 40 million tons through the provision of ICT, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the Fujitsu Group's facilities globally by 35% compared to 1990. The Fujitsu Group Environmental Action Plan Stage VIII further deepens the company's activities in the aim to achieve a sustainable and affluent society and contribute to the resolution of social and environmental issues through ICT. This includes contributing to customers and society using the framework of the sustainable development goals (SDGs)(1) established by the United Nations in 2015, and reducing its environmental burden across the entire value chain. Major Results from Fiscal 2015
1. Providing ICT to help cut greenhouse gas emissions by about 40 million tons
The Fujitsu Group quantitatively visualizes the degree to which the ICT it provides to its customers contributes to reductions in their greenhouse gas emissions, and aims to expand the scale of that contribution. As a result of including solutions utilizing cloud-based services and tablets in the calculations for fiscal 2015, the scale of Fujitsu's contribution to greenhouse gas emission reductions around the world is a cumulative total of about 40 million tons since fiscal 2013, achieving the goal of more than 38 million tons in the Fujitsu Group Environmental Action Plan (Stage VII). 2. Greenhouse gas emissions by Fujitsu Group facilities cut about 35% compared to fiscal 1990
Under the Fujitsu Group Environmental Action Plan (Stage VII), Fujitsu worked to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Fujitsu Group facilities by over 20% compared with fiscal 1990. In fiscal 2015, Fujitsu undertook CO2 emission reduction provisions, including energy-saving measures (such as installing inverters and using the best available technology) at each facility, increasing the efficiency of manufacturing processes, ensuring the optimal operation of factory infrastructure, visualization of energy consumption and promoting the utilization of data measurement. In addition, Fujitsu also worked to reduce emission of perfluorocarbons (PFCs), which have a high global warming potential, by switching the gas used in semiconductor manufacturing facilities from PFCs to other gasses with a low potential, as well as installing PFC gas removal equipment. As a result, Fujitsu greatly exceeded its goal, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by about 35% compared to fiscal 1990. 3. Promoting eco-friendly data centers improves PUE(2) by more than 2%
With the expansion of cloud services, the amount of energy consumed by data centers is increasing, and in the Fujitsu Group Environmental Action Plan (Stage VII), Fujitsu set a goal of improving the environmental performance of its major data centers. In fiscal 2015, by working to improve cooling efficiency, such as by expanding the number of hours that outside air is used, Fujitsu improved power usage effectiveness, or PUE, by over 2%, adding to improvements made in fiscal 2014. Efforts such as generating screens images that make it easy to check such conditions as electricity consumption levels and temperature also worked to generate efficiencies and bring greater visibility to the improvements. (1) Sustainable Development Goals Goals that clarify global-scale priority issues related to sustainable development by 2030
(2) Power usage effectiveness (PUE) A measure of data center power efficiency. It is the ratio of the total amount of energy used by the data center to the amount used by its ICT equipment. Lower values indicate low power usage by non-ICT equipment, indicating a power efficient data center.
