Mobile and Modular for Rapid Deployment: Siemens Announces New "Desal Developed" RO Systems for Industrial Water Desalination

SIWW, Singapore, June 28, 2010 - (ACN Newswire) - Siemens Water Technologies announces new pre-engineered reverse osmosis systems for treating seawater, brackish waters and high salinity wastewaters. The pre-engineered package systems include mobile-based, self-contained units allowing efficient site installation and rapid deployment. For larger flow requirements, the systems consist of factory assembled building blocks which can be re-assembled on site to facilitate a fixed plant design. The seawater reverse osmosis system is designed for a wide range of applications from the production of low salinity process water to wastewater reuse and recycle.

Water scarcity is an issue in many regions of the world. Consistent water availability impacts the ability for industrial expansion and economic growth. Alternative source water management will be vitally important in addressing future water needs. Water reuse and desalination help reduce the burden on source water supplies - both applications are growing and becoming more accepted. In order to alleviate pressure on local freshwater supplies, a wide range of industries have chosen to use desalinated seawater, when economics and local availability make sense.

The fully-integrated, mobile based self-contained RO system incorporates three main components: a safety filter, a high pressure pump and energy recovery system and a membrane array complete with motor controls and central control system. All necessary pipes, pumps and ancillary equipment are included and pre-assembled into a standard overseas shipping container. Similarly packaged mobile pretreatment systems, post treatment systems and membrane Clean in Place (CIP) units are also available to create a complete water treatment system.

Larger flow systems which require equipment that is too large to be fully built within the confines of standard overseas shipping containers are designed in manageable sub assemblies which are built and tested in our factory and then shipped to the job site for final field assembly thus limiting the amount of field work. These sub system building blocks are system engineered into a customer focused solution to meet the demanding needs of each individual application. This approach yields a feature rich, cost effective, customized solution, while minimizing risks associated with traditional on site "stick built" approaches.

The Desal Developed systems incorporate robust components designed with energy efficiency in mind. The electric motor driven high pressure pump is controlled by a variable frequency drive controller thus creating only the necessary membrane feed pressures. An energy recovery system is utilized to recycle the waste pressures found in the concentrate stream. These features yield an electrical efficient design that produces permeate water in the range of 3 to 4 kwh/m3, depending upon feed water temperature and salinity.
