Samsung Selects ST-Ericsson Solution for Super-Fast Smartphone
Samsung launches world's first 21Mbps smartphone using ST-Ericsson HSPA+ thin modem

BARCELONA, Feb 17, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - Samsung Electronics, one of the world`s leading mobile phone manufacturers, has selected an advanced HSPA+ modem from ST-Ericsson to support its' pioneering Galaxy S(TM) 4G, exclusively from T-Mobile USA - the first 4G HSPA+ smartphone capable of theoretical peak download speeds of up to 21Mbps and upload speeds of up to 5.76 Mbps. The power-efficient and highly-integrated Thor(TM) M5720 modem enables the new smartphone, which recently was launched by T-Mobile USA on America`s largest 4G network, to enjoy an unprecedented combination of fast connectivity and strong battery life.

The Thor M5720 modem also supports 64-QAM technology, enabling mobile operators to make more efficient use of their spectrum and transfer more data simultaneously through the air, resulting in a better mobile broadband experience for the consumer.

"The Galaxy S 4G handset will provide consumers and business people with a great experience, whether they are surfing the web, uploading videos, posting photographs or accessing real-time location based services," said Hyungmoon No, VP of R&D Strategy Group, of Samsung Electronics. "ST-Ericsson's HSPA+ solutions are helping Samsung to develop cost-effective, high-performance smartphones that don't compromise on battery life."

"Together, Samsung and ST-Ericsson are breaking new ground by rolling out a super-fast 4G smartphone that can connect to the Internet at higher-speeds than most fixed-line connections," said Jrgen Lantto, Executive Vice President, Chief Technology Officer and Strategy of ST-Ericsson. "Our world's first advanced HSPA+ technology for smartphones is making 21Mbps connectivity a new benchmark for advanced smartphones, while enabling mobile operators to make more efficient use of their spectrum and their customers to enjoy very advanced multimedia services."
