HONG KONG, June 28, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - Hai Kang Life Corporation Limited ("Hai Kang Life"), a Hong Kong-based biotechnology company founded by professor Albert Cheung-Hoi Yu, has just received significant worldwide attention by being featured in Science magazine, the leading global scientific journal.
The Friday (June 24) issue of Science contained a full page 'News Focus on Biotechnology' article on a revolutionary new lab-on-a-chip technology that is poised to change the current clinical diagnostic paradigm, and put Hong Kong firmly on the international biotech map.
The EFADchip system developed by Hai Kang Life utilizes its propertiary patented technology to detect the presence of a pathogens genetic material in a fraction of the time and with a higher precision than existing tests. This Electric Field Assisted Diagnostic (EFAD) method is also inexpensive, allowing whole at-risk populations to be screened. For example, anyone displaying flu-like symptoms can be tested for the presence of different viruses including H1N1 or SARS. Such screening would allow for accurate disease diagnosis and thus appropriate treatment could be given to patient immediately.
In addition to infectious disease diagnosis, EFADchip can also be used for cancer detection, genetic disease testing, disease surveillance and control, as well as for non-clinical applciations such as veterinary diagnostics, environmental monitoring, testing food for microbial or GMO contamination.
The new EFADchip system comprises of chip and chip-reader ("bio-reader") that can easily be deployed to rural communities where lab facilities are unavailable. In fact, they are so small they can be installed on the office desk top of any doctor. Timely deployment of these units to disease outbreak areas could prevent the development of a global pandemic. According to Zhengping Zhuang, a clinical pathologist at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, who is not connected to Hai Kang Life, the EFADchip and the bio-reader is a unique system and it gets a readout much faster than with other technologies."
Bernard Roizman, a virologist at the University of Chicago in Illinois also comments that the EFADchip system is small in size and effectively it is a lab on a chip on wheels.
