Tobias Huschke from Parabel AG, a sponsor company at the marcus evans European Facility Management Summit 2012, on reducing electricity costs through solar energy. |
London, Apr 26, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - "Solar power systems provide a future-proof, decentralised and climate-friendly power supply that can benefit all activities in Facility Management (FM)," says Tobias Huschke, Head of Business Development, Parabel AG. Facility Managers can ensure their organisations make money by generating power on the roofs of their buildings, he adds.
From a sponsor company at the marcus evans European Facility Management Summit 2012, taking place in Frankfurt, Germany, 9 - 11 May, Huschke discusses Photovoltaic (PV) systems and how to increase a building's value for the long-term.
- Why should facility managers make more use of solar energy?
Depending on the location of the facility, facility managers can benefit from national programmes, such as the feed-in tariffs for electricity, or they can simply reduce and stabilise energy costs by running their own power plant on top of the building. Additionally they may also purchase green power produced by a power plant on their roof for similar or even better and more stable prices than from a utility.
Depending on their demand set, large facilities can produce 20 to 100 per cent of the energy they need over the day with a PV system on their roof. The energy is used instead of purchased from a utility, saving the organisation a large sum of money in the long-term.
Facility managers can ensure that their organisation is not hit by the rising electricity prices we will see in the coming decades.
- Can all buildings utilise PV systems?
In the past, energy systems were mainly designed according to the size of roofs, however, they are now being designed according to the electricity and consumption needs of a building. If there is adequate space available, a larger PV power plant may also be installed on the ground.
With decreasing subsidies and tariffs for PV systems in Europe organisations will rather use the produced energy by themselves than selling the power and pay for electricity consumption.
- Are organisations paying more attention to sustainability and the environment today?
Definitely, facility managers must be able to show improvements in their Corporate Social Responsibility report. It is becoming more and more important to have green building certificates. Facility managers should always look towards financial, sustainable and ecological insights; PV systems are something they can prosper from.
- What is your outlook for the future?
Electricity prices will continue to rise, so it is now a good time to start securing a building's electricity price by utilising PV systems that are renewable and low maintenance. This will increase the value of the building over time.
