NEC Selected for Telefonica's LTE Pilot Trial

TOKYO, Oct 23, 2009 - (ACN Newswire) - NEC Corporation announced today its selection as a supplier for Telefonica's LTE pilot trial. NEC was one of the six providers chosen for Telefonica's test projects which will be conducted in six different countries where the telecom operates.

The project, coordinated globally and underpinned by the advantages afforded from Telefonica's geographic scale, forms part of the process for selecting technology partners in LTE networks, the rollout of which Telefonica aims to be prepared for, in line with its status as an international leader in innovation.

NEC will participate in the trial which includes laboratory tests and the installation of e-node Bs in the field. NEC's wireless base stations are built in compliance with 3GPP(1) mobile communications standards. In addition to featuring the world's top level amplifier efficiency, the systems can also be efficiently constructed and operated in an environmentally friendly way through the adoption of a variety of new technologies, including SON (Self Organizing Network).

"We are very pleased to participate in this ambitious and valuable pilot trial.", said Toshiyuki Mineno, Senior Vice President, NEC Corporation. "NEC has already been selected for the development and production of LTE equipment by the world's leading WCDMA and CDMA mobile operators(2) and we are confident that we can contribute to the success of this pilot trial," he continued.

Looking forward, NEC is seeking to drive the development of LTE systems and to contribute to the construction of mobile networks through next generation communication systems.

(1) 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP):
A partnership project that produces detailed specifications for IMT-2000 W-CDMA. Specifications created by the 3GPP are in accordance with standards established throughout a wide range of countries. The 3GPP is composed of companies and organizations that span the globe, including some of the world's most influential mobile telecommunications companies.
