NEC Launches H.265/HEVC Ultra-Low Delay Codec that Enables Real-Time Processing of 4K Ultra-High-Definition Video
- Achieves ultra-low delay processing of approximately 99 ms -

TOKYO, Apr 6, 2016 - (JCN Newswire) - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) today announced plans to globally launch the VC-970 encoder and VD-970 decoder in July 2016 as part of a new H.265/HEVC codec family that make it possible to process 4K/ Ultra-High-Definition (UHD) video in real time.

This new product series is capable of encoding 4K/UHD video to approximately one five hundredth of its original size, while performing ultra-low delay encoding and decoding of approximately 99 milliseconds. It also supports BT.2020 and HDR, which is a next-generation technology that expands the color gamut while increasing brightness and producing a high quality and truly immersive 4K/UHD video.

The new hardware-based and compact sized (1U half rack) 4K/UHD codec is the successor of the first generation model (VC-8150/VD-8150) which has been highly praised for its highly-reliable hardware-based design and rich experience in commercial 4K/UHD broadcasting services.

In recent years, demand for 4K/UHD video quality has been rapidly increasing. As a result, the development of 4K/UHD related technologies are being accelerated around the globe to meet such rising demand.

Under these circumstances, NEC has targeted H.265/HEVC as a core technology and is now developing a full line-up of products for broadcasting and distributing programs of 2K, 4K and 8K.

"NEC has been driving the development of advanced broadcasting services such as 4K and 8K in an effort to help promote 4K/UHD broadcasting services," said Tooru Watanabe, general manager, Broadcast and Media Division, NEC Corporation. "This new product series will contribute to the realization and improvement of 4K broadcasting through the use of encoding technology and ultra-low delay technology."

NEC will exhibit the latest broadcasting and video solutions, including these new products, at the world's largest broadcast equipment exhibition, the "NAB SHOW 2016," from booth #SL15713 at the Las Vegas Convention Center from April 16 to 21 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
