NEC Provides Biometric Identification Solution for Junaeb National School Meal Program in Chile
- Supporting optimized nutrition and resource distribution -

TOKYO, Mar 8, 2017 - (JCN Newswire) - NEC Corporation (TSE: 6701) today announced that NEC Chile successfully trialed a biometric identification solution using fingerprint recognition technologies for the school meal program administered by Chile's National Board of Aid and Scholarships (JUNAEB). This trial took place from November to December throughout 30 schools, incorporating 30,000 students across the cities of Santiago, Chile's largest city, Rancagua and Concepcion.

JUNAEB is a public institution that was created in 1964 in order to ensure that children have access the necessary resources for succeeding in the education system. The organization manages the administration of school meal programs, health programs, student housing and more.

Although successfully organized, JUNAEB faces many challenges in supervising and implementing its school meal program. With more than 1.5 million students eligible for receiving meal benefits, there is a shortage of personnel to ensure that the program is properly administered, resulting in a lack of student traceability and validation.

NEC's biometric identification solution, which can be easily scaled to cover all of Chile's eligible students, enables JUNAEB to maximize the visibility of benefit distribution and the application of resources. The solution works with a centralized platform to guarantee the traceability of beneficiaries and prevent fraudulent use by unauthorized users. Moreover, schools can immediately view data on the amount of food being consumed and implement improvements in order to reduce waste. This is in addition to the availability of personalized reports that provide a clear overview of a student's meal activity, helping to ensure proper nutrition.

"This is the first time that a system of this kind has been implemented in Chile," said Gabriel Martinez, CEO, NEC Chile. "Our objective is to drive the success of this trial program, thereby creating a new opportunity to help millions of families and students across Latin America."
