NEC Selected as Vendor for NTT DOCOMO's 1.5GHz Remote Radio Equipment for LTE Base Stations

TOKYO, Apr 28, 2010 - (ACN Newswire) - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701), a leading network, communications and information technology company, announced today its selection as the development and manufacturing vendor for NTT DOCOMO, INC.'s (Headquarters: Tokyo; President and CEO: Ryuji Yamada; DOCOMO) 1.5GHz remote radio equipment (RRE) for LTE base stations.

LTE base stations consist of base station digital equipment (BDE) that feature digital signal processing and maintenance surveillance functions, as well as RRE equipped with RF receiving, RF transmission and modulation functions. BDE and RRE are connected via optical fiber (*1) and one BDE can connect to multiple RREs.

NEC's RRE provide a compact and low electricity consumption solution by adopting a specially developed miniature low-loss dielectric filter (*2) and a high efficiency amplifier that meets some of highest industry standards. These features reduce the time and space required for installation, simplify maintenance and lead to cost reductions for equipment, operations and CO2 emissions.

In addition to the 1.5GHz RRE, NEC was also selected to deploy 2GHz LTE base stations and is slated to provide DOCOMO with BDE, core network equipment and related switch products. Furthermore, NEC was selected as both the development and manufacturing vendor for LTE mobile terminals.

From telecommunications infrastructure to mobile terminals, NEC supports DOCOMO's commercial LTE network service as a total system provider.

Looking forward, NEC will continue contributing to further development of next generation mobile infrastructure for both domestic and international markets.

Notes
*1) The Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI (TM)) is used as an interface between BDE and RRE. CPRI is a specification for the key internal radio base station interface between the Radio Equipment Control and the Radio Equipment. http://www.cpri.info/index.html

*2) Dielectric filter:
A component that is capable of retrieving specific frequencies from multiple frequencies.
