NEC Participates in LTE Trial with SingTel

TOKYO, May 7, 2010 - (ACN Newswire) - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today its participation as the only Japanese vendor in Singapore Telecommunications Limited's (Headquarters: Singapore; Group CEO: Chua Sock Koong; SingTel) field trials of LTE (Long Term Evolution), a next generation mobile communications standard.

Together with its regional partners, SingTel is Asia's largest multi-market mobile operator, serving more than 285 million mobile customers in eight markets.

This trial is scheduled to be carried out by SingTel and its telecommunication carrier subsidiaries in Indonesia, Australia and the Philippines. NEC is participating in the trial through Globe Telecom (*1) in the Philippines.

The trial will verify functions that are vital for future LTE business services, including the confirmation of data capacity and throughput, as well as the handover of existing networks and interoperability with third-party devices, all of which within a high-speed transmission environment. NEC is implementing verification and interoperability tests via the provision of wireless base stations, EPC core network devices (*2) and more.

"NEC is honored to take part in these LTE field trials in cooperation with the SingTel Group's Globe Telecom. We are confident that we can contribute to the success of this trial and support SingTel's network transformation LTE strategy," said Kazuya Hashimoto, general manager of NEC's Mobile Access Network Division."

In addition to its domestic accomplishments in Japan, NEC is recognized as a leading international LTE vendor through its selection and participation in LTE trials for Europe's largest telecommunications company, Telefonica in Spain. NEC aims to leverage its experience and achievement in this field to drive the success of these trials and to maximize the company's contributions to the early commercialization of LTE.

(*1) Globe Telecom Inc.
Globe Telecom is the Philippines' 2nd largest mobile telecommunications carrier (Headquarters: Mandaluyong City, Philippines; President & CEO: Mr. Ernest Cu) and its leading shareholders include Singtel (47%) and Ayala Corporation (31%). The company boasts approximately 23 million mobile phone subscribers for a domestic share of 32% (as of the end of 2009).

(*2) EPC Core Network Devices
EPC core network devices consist of components that process location registration and signal reception for LTE terminals, carry out handover between wireless base stations as a MME (Mobility Management Entity), processes user data for 2G/3G and LTE systems (packet transmission data, voice data, etc.) as a Serving-GW and manage interfaces for EPC and outside networks (Internet, IMS, etc.) as a PDN-GW.
