NEC and Fujitsu Win Asia Submarine-cable Express (ASE)

TOKYO, Jan 31, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE 6701) and Fujitsu Limited (Fujitsu; TSE 6702) today announced an agreement with NTT Communications, the Philippines Long Distance Telephone Company, StarHub Limited and Telekom Malaysia Berhad to construct the Asia Submarine-cable Express system, a high-bandwidth optical submarine cable system that will link Japan to Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Malaysia.

"NEC is proud to be the supplier for the ASE, a 40G state-of-the-art long haul system, incorporating OADM technologies that will provide additional connectivity and capacity between regions of Asia and the world that increasingly require more bandwidth," said Junji Yasui, Executive Vice President at NEC Corporation.

"Fujitsu is honored to be a part of the ASE and to deliver one of the key element of the system, featuring newest technologies, which enables higher speed, larger capacity and ultra-long transmission. Fujitsu commits itself to continue to contribute, with industry leading technologies, to fulfill strong demands for more capacity in cloud computing society" said Hideyuki Saso, Corporate Senior Executive Vice President at Fujitsu Limited.

The ASE is designed for a transmission speed of 40Gb/s. Overall project management will be carried out jointly by the NEC and Fujitsu consortium. The manufacture and installation of all submersible plants such as Repeaters, OADM Branching Units and Cables, the Power Feeding Equipment and submersible plant monitoring system will be implemented by NEC. The manufacture and installation of Submarine Line Terminal Equipment and the Management Controller will be implemented by Fujitsu.

The ASE will meet the demand for intra-Asia connectivity between South East Asia and North Asia.
